Tragic Death at Jadavpur University Police Blocked from Accessing Crucial Witness

In a shocking turn of events, the Jadavpur University community is grappling with the tragic death of a first-year student, who allegedly succumbed to injuries after being ragged and thrown from a second-floor balcony. The incident, which occurred on the night of August 9, has sent shockwaves throughout the academic community and beyond.

Police Hindered from Gathering Vital Evidence

The gravity of the situation was further intensified when a group of current and former students reportedly blocked police access to the injured student at the hospital.

  • This obstruction prevented the police from recording the student’s statement, which could have been a pivotal piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
  • The chief public prosecutor emphasized the significance of this missed opportunity during a court hearing on Sunday.

Details Emerge from the Shadows

Joydip Ghosh, a former student of JU, was arrested on Saturday and has been accused of deterring public servants from performing their duties. The prosecutor, Sourin Ghosal, stated that Ghosh, along with others, barred the police from entering the hostel campus and subsequently from approaching the injured student at the hospital.

The police, acting on Ghosh’s statement, have identified several other individuals who allegedly played a role in obstructing justice. These individuals are believed to have locked the hostel gate after the tragic incident, hindering the police’s entry.

Unraveling the Sequence of Events

On August 10, officers from the Jadavpur police station initiated a suo motu case, detailing their attempts to access the injured student.

  • Their efforts were thwarted when they found the hostel gate locked from the inside. Following a taxi that emerged from the hostel premises, the police were led to a private hospital.
  • However, their attempts to approach the injured student were once again obstructed.

Investigations reveal that Ghosh identified at least six individuals who were allegedly involved in this non-cooperation with the police. All these individuals will be examined and their statements verified.

Interestingly, sources suggest that Ghosh wasn’t present at the hostel during the incident but arrived later, being summoned by another student.

Current Status of the Case

To date, 13 students and former students have been arrested in connection with the incident. While all except Ghosh face murder charges, Ghosh remains in police custody until August 24.

As the Jadavpur University community mourns the loss of a young life, questions arise about campus safety, student behavior, and the role of alumni. What measures should universities take to ensure such tragedies don’t recur? Share your thoughts and join the conversation.
