IMD Forecasts Torrential Rains Multiple States on High Alert

In a recent weather update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm bells, forecasting severe rains and thunderstorms for various states across the nation, commencing today.

Heavy Rainfall Predicted for Northeast India and Sikkim

The Met Office has highlighted that a significant rainfall spell is anticipated over northeast India and Sikkim this week.

  • This comes as most regions of northwest India have already been experiencing substantial rainfall over the past few days.
  • The IMD’s projections indicate that states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh are set to witness more of these heavy downpours in the upcoming days.

Uttarakhand on Orange Alert

The IMD’s latest bulletin has not only forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Uttarakhand but has also issued an orange alert for the hill state.

  • Specific districts, including the capital, Dehradun, are expected to be significantly impacted.
  • An orange alert has been specifically issued for districts like Dehradun, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Bageshwar, while a yellow alert is in place for Haridwar, Tehri, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, and Pithoragarh districts.

Delhi-NCR and Mumbai to Experience Light Showers

Residents of the national capital can expect light rainfall over the next three days.

  • However, the persistent humidity in Delhi-NCR is unlikely to see any respite.
  • Meanwhile, Mumbai, the financial capital, is also bracing for light to moderate showers, expected to continue until August 25, affecting adjoining districts like Thane, Raigad, and Palghar.

Other States on the IMD’s Radar

The Met Office has also predicted rainfall in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana-Chandigarh. Isolated regions in Himachal Pradesh are likely to witness very heavy rainfall on August 23 and 24, while northwest Uttar Pradesh is set for similar weather conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Assam and Meghalaya Brace for Heavy Showers

Northeastern states, particularly Assam and Meghalaya, are gearing up for heavy rainfall this week. The IMD has stated, “Isolated very heavy rainfall also likely over Assam & Meghalaya during 21st–25th and over Arunachal Pradesh during 23rd-25th August, 2023.”

In light of these predictions, it’s crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay updated and take necessary precautions. How are you preparing for the rains?
