Karnataka Breaks Away from NEP Announces State Specific Education Policy

In a significant move, the Karnataka government has taken the bold step of withdrawing from the National Education Policy (NEP) and has announced its intention to introduce a state-specific education policy. This new policy is set to be implemented from the upcoming academic year, marking a departure from the central government’s educational framework.

Decision After High-Level Meeting

The decision was finalized after a high-level meeting that saw the participation of state government officials, esteemed academics, and vice-chancellors from Karnataka’s universities.

  • Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar communicated the outcome to the media, emphasizing the state’s commitment to charting its own educational course.
  • We have decided to scrap the National Education Policy, which has been adopted by the BJP government.
  • Next year, we are coming out with the new Karnataka Education Policy, Shivakumar stated.

Special Committee for New Policy

To ensure the new policy aligns with the state’s unique needs and future requirements, a special committee will be constituted next week. This committee will be tasked with detailing the nuances of the proposed state policy.

Alignment with Election Promises

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had previously hinted at this move, aligning with the Congress’s election manifesto that pledged to do away with the contentious NEP. This decision underscores the state’s commitment to fulfilling its electoral promises.

Other States’ Stance on NEP

Shivakumar highlighted the reluctance of several BJP-ruled states to embrace the NEP, despite the central government’s push. He remarked, “Many BJP-ruled states have not shown any interest in the NEP while Tamil Nadu and Kerala have already rejected it.”

Karnataka’s Educational Prowess

The Deputy Chief Minister took pride in Karnataka’s educational achievements, emphasizing its stature as an education hub.

  • “Karnataka is a knowledge capital and we have the largest number of international schools, primary schools, and professional colleges. We have our own system of quality education,” he proudly declared.

In response, the BJP has voiced its opposition to the Congress government’s plan to replace the NEP with a state-centric policy.
