Dark Web and Deception Delhi Call Centre Scam Dupes US Nationals

In a significant crackdown, the Gautam Buddha Nagar police busted a call centre scam, arresting 84 individuals, including 34 women, for allegedly duping hundreds of US nationals over a period of approximately four months. The accused employees of the call centre secured the phone numbers of US nationals through the dark web and deceived them by convincing them that their social security numbers had been compromised. The executives then offered assistance in exchange for the victims’ bank account details, posing as personnel from the Social Security Administration (SSA) agency in the US.

The operation was carried out after the police received a tip-off about an illegal call centre operating from a rented premises in sector-6, Noida.

  • “On Wednesday, a team searched the office and we found that 84 persons were working there and were involved in duping US nationals.
  • All of them were arrested later,” said Shakti Mohan Avasthy, Additional DCP.
  • The police also recovered 150 computer sets, 13 mobile phones, a server along with a router, and Rs 20 lakh in cash from the spot.

The incident highlights the growing menace of cybercrime and the sophisticated methods employed by criminals to deceive individuals and compromise their financial security. It is a stark reminder of the importance of being vigilant and cautious while sharing personal and financial information over the phone or the internet.
