The Indian film industry mourns the loss of a legend as veteran lyricist and poet Dev Kohli passed away in Mumbai on August 26. The sad news was confirmed by Dev Kohli’s spokesperson, Pritam Sharma, who informed Indianexpress.com that Kohli was admitted at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital for the last few months and passed away in his sleep early on Saturday morning. He was 81 years old.
Dev Kohli’s Antim Darshan will be held at 2 pm at his residence in Lokhandwala Complex, Mumbai, and his last rites will be performed at 6 pm at Oshiwara Crematorium, Jogeshwari West.
About Dev Kohli
Born on November 2, 1942, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Dev Kohli spent his childhood in Dehradun after moving there from Delhi in 1949. He penned over a hundred songs for Bollywood films such as Baazigar, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Maine Pyaar Kiya, and Shoot Out At Lokhandwala. His last work was for the Kangana Ranaut-starrer Rajjo, which had music by Uttam Singh.
Dev Kohli’s Journey in Hindi Films
Dev Kohli worked with different generations of composers from 1969 to 2013.
- In an old interview with Planet Bollywood, he shared his journey as a lyricist and his association with music composer Anu Malik.
- He mentioned that the first song he wrote for Malik was “Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein” from Baazigar (1993), which became a huge hit.
- He praised Malik for his lively personality and ability to compose the mukhda in 2-3 minutes.
- Kohli also revealed that he would always write the song in the studio itself and never take a tune home to write the verses.
The film fraternity, including Anand Raaj Anand, Anu Malik, and Uttam Singh, will be present to pay their last respects to the legendary lyricist.
