In a scathing attack, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray questioned the intentions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to South Africa, amidst the successful landing of the Chandrayaan-3 lander module on the moon’s South Pole. Thackeray pointedly asked whether PM Modi went to South Africa to represent India or the ‘Indian Mujahideen’, a term the BJP had previously used to compare the INDIA bloc.
Thackeray expressed pride in the Chandrayaan-3 achievement but criticized PM Modi for his overseas visit during such a pivotal moment for the nation. He highlighted the BJP’s previous comparison of the INDIA bloc with the ‘Indian Mujahideen’ and questioned the representation PM Modi carried during his South Africa visit.
PM Modi embarked on a four-day formal tour to South Africa and Greece on August 21. He attended the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg from August 22-24, at the invitation of South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.
Furthermore, Thackeray lambasted PM Modi for encouraging his leaders to get Rakhi tied by Muslim women, suggesting instead that they should approach Bilkis Bano of Gujarat.
- Bano, a victim of the 2002 post-Godhra riots, was gang-raped while pregnant, witnessed the murder of her child and relatives, and saw the culprits released by the Gujarat government.
- Thackeray denounced this as hypocrisy and a distortion of Hindutva.
